What should you pay attention to when buying the right lamp?
November 7 2025
Buying a lamp seems simple, but choosing the right lighting requires more attention than you might think. Light determines not only what you see, but also how you feel in a room. The atmosphere, comfort, and overall look of your interior all depend on the right light.
In this blog you can read what to look for when buying a lamp, so that you make exactly the right choice for your space.
1. Choose the right light color (also called Kelvin)
The color of the light , expressed in Kelvin (K) , has a huge influence on the atmosphere.
- Warm light (1800K – 3000K)Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms. It creates a cozy and relaxing atmosphere.
-
Neutral white (3000K – 4000K) : suitable for kitchens and bathrooms, where you want to see clearly but not too cool.
-
Cool white (4000K – 6500K) : perfect for workspaces or desks, as it stimulates concentration.
Tip: Do you want flexibility? Choose a dimmable lamp or smart lighting that allows you to adjust the color temperature according to the time of day. We can customize this specifically to your wishes. Make an appointment in our showroom or contact us.
2. Pay attention to the light intensity (also called lumens)
Light intensity, expressed in lumens (lm) , determines how brightly a lamp shines.
- Mood lighting: 100 – 400 lumens (e.g. table lamp or wall lamp).
-
Functional lighting : 400 – 800 lumens (e.g. kitchen or work area).
-
Basic lighting : 800 – 1500 lumens (e.g. ceiling lamp or pendant lamp above a table).
The larger the room, the more lumens you need. Also consider the color of your walls . Dark shades absorb light, meaning you need more lighting.
3. Think about the function of the lamp
Not every lamp is meant to illuminate the entire room. Lighting has three main functions:
-
Basic lighting: fills the room with even light (ceiling light, spotlights).
-
Mood lighting: brings warmth and coziness (floor or table lamps).
-
Accent lighting: emphasizes details such as art, plants, or furniture (wall lamp or spotlight).
Tip: Combine different types of light to create balance and depth in your interior. This is also known as layered lighting.
4. Pay attention to the design and style
The right lamp enhances your interior style.
-
A lamp with clean lines and metallic accents fits well in a modern interior .
-
For a rustic or bohemian atmosphere, natural materials such as wood, rattan, or linen work perfectly.
-
In a luxury interior, brass, glass, and marble look fantastic.
Also consider the dimensions of the lamp : a lamp that is too small above a large table looks unbalanced, while an oversized lamp in a small space can be overwhelming. Make an appointment in our showroom or contact us . We are happy to provide no-obligation advice!
